Synology RS819 4-Bay RackStation NAS for Business in 2019

New RS819 RackStation Value Business Rackmount Synology NAS Server

Synology has many different long-running ranges of device’ in it’s NAS drives. Depending on the product family, the release of these devices can range from almost annually, to every 4 or 5 years (I am looking at you DS119j). Alongside their reputation for having a fantastically user-friendly and innovative software user interface, with DiskStation Manager (DSM) on powerful yet compact devices, they are also known to feature a series of cost-effective or value NAS servers that provide you with a decent sized chunk of what DSM can do, along with a price-tag that is a good deal lower than their flagship PLUS and XS series. For a small business user that is unaware of how much they will use the NAS, or are well aware of it and it only extends to company file management, these ‘Value’ series of devices are a really appealing idea – hence why they (and maybe you) will be pleased to know that the affordable Synology RS819 Rackmount Business NAS is Releasing soon. This new RS819 NAS in the Rackstation series will feature support for popular Synology business applications that can replace much of the more expensive or license locked applications for you and your employees. But is this more affordable business rack based NAS worth your time and your data? Let’s discuss.

Who is the Synology RS819 Cost Effective Rackmount NAS for?

First and foremost, it is worth saying that this is by no means the most powerful or capable Synology 4-Bay Rackmount NAS you can buy. For that, you would need to look at the more expensive RS818+ and RS1619xs+ NAS devices, that feature quad-core Intel Atom or Xeon CPUs, along with more memory and 10Gbe upgradability. The new Synology RS819 is not trying to be the most powerful, it is designed to give business users who are looking for a standard level of network storage for their critical data a much more affordable alternative. If you don’t need all the extra bells and whistles on the larger and more powerful devices, why on earth should you buy them? Moreover, even in 2019, many NAS users are still using older and less capable storage that they have wrapped their business around, or are currently using a series of RAID DAS solutions, or DropBox – these people business owners are going to be reluctant to spend SERIOUS money on a data storage solution right now. It is for those NAS buyers than the much more affordable and cost-effective RS819 has been developed. Providing a solid base of storage and software, along with many of the service and support that Synology is famous for, at a more attractive price tag.

What Can the Synology RS819 Budget RackStation NAS do?

As mentioned, the Synology RS819 can do a large number of the core and functions of the Synology DSM software (currently in version 6.2 with DSM 7.0 hopefully on the horizon), as well as supporting multiple 3rd party applications in your home or business environment. Although the internet hardware is comparatively modest (a 4 core ARM-based CPU, compared with the x86 Intel processors in almost all other Synology RackStation devices) it can still perform remarkably well and can be used in the following ways (all of these apps are free and included with your Synology NAS in the app center):

  • Use the Synology Office Application as an alternative to Google Docs and Microsoft Office
  • Synology Chat can be used to communicate with other users for free, via the NAS, Desktop app or mobile application. Much like Skype and WhatsApp
  • Synology Calendar is an alternative to Microsoft and Google alternatives, letting you export and sync from other sources
  • Use the Synology Drive application in on the NAS, on PC, Mac or Mobile device for 1-point access to all your files that can open everything – comparable to DropBox and Google Drive
  • Catalogue Photos, Videos, Stock Footage, Audio and more with the Photo station, video station, music station and Moments application
  • Use the award-winning Surveillance Station application to monitor up to 30 cameras over the network for a comprehensive and business class CCTV operation
  • The Cloud Sync application to allow you to synchronize with cloud providers and create multiple offsite backups, or send data either way

  • Multiple 3rd party customer relationship manager (CRM) applications available, as well as numerous first and third-party content management systems (CMS) to choose from
  • The docker application allows you to run bespoke and unique compact applications
  • Numerous iOS and Android applications to access your RS819 in file specific ways
  • Use the RS819 as a Plex Media Server, though transcoding and more dense files may struggle
  • RAID and SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) allow you to create a much safer and reliable data environment. This is further supported with background snapshots, BTRFS file self-healing and a multi-tier selection of backup options

These are just a few of the things the Synology RS819 Rackstation NAS can provide, even at that modest price tag and with the weaker, yet more efficient internal hardware.

What Can the Synology RS819 Budget Rackstation NAS not do?

However, I would be lying if I said that the hardware inside is going to give you the fullest and more extensive experience of Diskstation Manager and several of the more enterprise, or more powerful, software abilities of the software are not going to be available to you using this device. So, if any of the following applications are on your ‘ESSENTIAL’ list of NAS factors, then you may need to spend a little more on a PLUS or XS NAS drive:

  • The CPU is not powerful enough to support the Synology virtual machine manager. Although it can be used as a storage target by other applications, it does not feature sufficient power to do this itself
  • The Active Backup Suite software is currently not confirmed as supported on the RS819 Rack NAS and is almost a whole reason on its own to buy a more expensive NAS, as it allows whole environmental backup of PCs, servers, NAS’, cloud, VMs and more. Saving more businesses literally thousands of pounds a year
  • Although the CPU is confirmed to feature 4K support, it will not handle more dense H.264 media, or Plex to any degree above ‘low’
  • Any further developments into AI and deep learning functionality will almost certainly mean that the RS819 will not be fully prepared for it beyond jsut the app installation itself
  • No PCIe slot, 10Gbe ports or SSD Caching bays means that in most cases you will not be able to use this for any kind of large scale editing of files, either internally or externally. Although the RS819 does feature link aggregation over two ports, it is still somewhat of a bottleneck

Pretty much ALL of the things listed above are all possible on Intel-powered Synology NAS devices, so if they fit with your storage environment plans, maybe skip a tier or two up in the range to the RS818+ or RS1219+ NAS.

When will the Synology RS819 Rackmount NAS Drive for Business be Released?

aWe are still awaiting further information regarding the official release date of the Synology RS819 NAS, however, it is now listed on the Taiwanese product pages and surely the rest of the world’s pages will shortly follow. This means we will likely see a release in the next few weeks. Though I will, of course, update you with any changes as and when.

How much will the Synology RS819 Rack NAS Cost?

The previous 4-Bay budget friendly rackmount NAS from Synology (the RS816) is currently listed at around £400+ without VAT, however, this unit was released quite a while ago and in all likelihood, the newer unit will be a good few quid higher (adjusted for time and that much more capable CPU and memory). I would guess around £440-450, however, that’s by no means concrete. I recommend checking here and seeing the price as it becomes available at Amazon

What are the Specifications of the Rackmount RS819 Rackstation NAS?

The hardware and software specifications of the Synology RS819 rackstation NAS is very similar to that of the DS118, DS218 and DS418, but in rackmount and expandable form. The previous unit, the RS816 featured an almost comically low CPU by comparison and the Realtek RTD1296 in the RS819 is a quad-core 1.4Ghz processor, 64bit in architecture (which is very, very important – as it makes is far more capable to handle modern tasks. This is further supported with 2GB of DDR4 memory that the official specifications state cannot be upgraded, however, I will reserve judgement on that for when I have the physical unit here with me. Below are the rest of the official technical specifications:
