1 or 2-bay Synology NAS for serving media (MP4 & MP3) files to my Samsung smart TV

Best NAS for simple work. I’m looking for a 1 or 2-bay Synology NAS for serving media (MP4 & MP3) files to my Samsung smart TVs, iPad and Windows PC and also for data backups (I keep an off-site backup in a safe deposit box using a WD element 2TB drive). Nothing fancy, but I can’t stand anything slow. I currently have a 2TB external drive plugged into my gigabit router, but it’s far too slow. My data currently totals 1.6TB. Which NAS do you recommend?

Different subject, but what’s the big deal with PLEX? Why would I need it if I already have my library stored in MP4 and MP3 files?

Plex is just a multimedia organizer app similar like built-in Synology DS Video app or Video station from Qnap. people choose it, because of its additional functionality. But most of the people do not need anything more than playback capabilities. The absolute minimums you can consider is DS118 which is good NAS for backing things up and running your own media server. You can playback your videos and music on your smart TV, and mobiles devices. It will even transcode video formats in case the destination device can not decode it for some reason. Dual drive option for the same NAS will be DS218. But if you need a little extra speed and functionality – look at DS218+. It is the most popular 2 bay solution.
