Choosing Between Synology and QNAP
Hi Rob, firstly thanks for an excellent article and the many videos you post.
I am looking to buy a nas for my home and don’t know too much about them. I’m not completely useless with tech but my knowledge is limited. I was thinking about the synology 918+ but having read your article maybe a Qnap might be better in the long run. I could do with some advice please.
I want to be able to do the following stuff on it:
Remote backup for my work server. 1.8tb in total but only 2-300gb of actual data.
Home surveylance with 4 x 4k hikvision cameras, plus remote login and monitoring on iPhone
Storage and playback of 300 or so dvds mostly Blu-ray
Kodi,Netflix etc.
Storage of photos, both jpeg and raw and psd.
Personal cloud backup for mobiles etc.
Cant think of anything else at the moment unless it could make me some strong coffee while I’m trying to figure out how to make it all work! Lol.Many thanksTony
Thank you for your message, I hope I can help (spot of British modesty there). I apologise for any typos in my reply, this is being composed whilst on the move. Additionally, forgive the slight delaying my reply, this is a one-man show and as I am sure you can appreciate, everyone loves a bit of free support. Anyway, moving this rather stereotypical English apologetic introduction aside, on to your question.
The QNAP NAS series does have the teensiest bit of a higher learning curve, but the sound like you will be absolutely fine – though you will struggle to get coffee out of the blighter! I would recommend the TS-453B if your budget can go that far, or the TS-453A if you find it a little tighter – as not only will these have sufficient power but also has 4 camera licences, great external and internal hardware and both will get you many years of stable, solid use! I would only add that though both can do the same tasks, the 453B can be either more individual processes or just do them a bit faster.
I would recommend checking out my comparison on the best 4-Bay NAS of 2018 to see how these two devices fair against the competition –
