HIPAA compliant uploads for my clients As a retirement side-gig, I design surgeries, and my clients need to upload optical scans (.STL) and CT scans (DICOM set and/or single file DICOM). I am using a conventional WD NAS right now, and “sweeping” files off of it soon after they arrive. But would rather be “legit” […]
Just adding that I had to buy a shield tv pro because the plex app on the TV WAS RUBBISH. Very jittery I think because the Ethernet port on the LG is 1Gbs WHICH NO GOOD for 4K. Transcoding on the gaming PC didn’t even work but shield did thankfully. Shield plays big 4K files […]
LAG Switch Unmanaged POE Love your work, you are doing a great job with helping the world better understand NASs. I am looking at buying a Synology 1621+, and was interested in your thoughts on a POE enabled 16 port switch that supports Link Aggregation. Might be a good article to share with your audience, […]

NAS Selection for a specific niche Good morning! Love your videos! I am new to the NAS world and have viewed a lot of your videos and would like your opinion on which NAS would best suite my specific needs. I work on boats for long periods of time and me and my shipmates have […]
Nas with Avid Thanks for your insights here and I will buy through your site, providing I can find the right NAS system. I have an AVID system (2020 HP Zbook Laptop PC but also an older version running on an old 2009 MAC ) and I want to use HD only footage, about 20TB […]
Roon Server on QNAP NAS QNAP Simply open the App Center in your QNAP adminstration web interface and launch the App Center. In the Entertainment section, you’ll find Roon Server and can install it with just one click. After installation you’ll need to specify the storage location for Roon Server’s database. Once this is done, […]

I just purchased a Qnap TVS-672N to use for three purposes 1) primary purpose is to use as a Plex Media Server for my home theater, 2) is back ups for my personal and small business docs, 3) possibly add surveillance at a later date. My plan is to use my Nvidia shield for transcoding […]
You need to choose between reliability and speed. Basic – is as fast as a single drive JBOD – also as fast as a single drive RAID0 – as fast as all drives speed combined RAID1 – write as fast as one disk, reading as fast as all drives combined SHR1 + RAID5 – write […]
Would you mind giving me a little more advice please. It’s not clear whether a Celeron CPU with a discrete GPU is better for transcoding than one with raw CPU power. I had a look on your website but couldn’t find the answer there either. I don’t suppose when you do the PLEx tests you […]
What is the difference between DS1621+ vs DS1621XS+? CPU benchmark on a DS1621+ is around 5000. DS1621xs+ CPU benchmark is around 8000. You also have more RAM on XS model. You also get 10Gbit port built in and an option to add additional 10Gbit LAN via PCIe card. In short, XS series model is much […]
comparison DS1621xs+ vs DS1520+ although 2 different classes, it would be nice to compare the differences because shared form factor to decide if price difference would be worth CPU is almost 3 times faster. Also, Xeon is not multimedia friendly, but it’s powerful enough to cope with even 4K files. XS series have ECC RAM […]

Would like to know about NAS drive with M.2 NVME option There are fe M.2 SATA options HS-453DX-4G and TBS-453DX-8G. Or maybe you can still find old TS-351-4G. Otherwise you may need to get TVS-472XT and use internal NVME for storage. Or use a NVMe card and set it up for storage. I hope this helps.
QNAP or Synology I have watch hours and hours of your youtube videos and thought I would ask the point straight out. I had my mind set on the DS1819+ from synology and was going to up the ram to 32 GB and add a combo m.2 and 10gbe interface and already have 8 x […]
How to protect NAS against RansomWare. Slides and a video from Synology.
I think my situation is pretty basic. I currently have a NSA: Seagate personal cloud (3TB) that I use for both PC backups and movie storage. Chiefly my kids (under 3) watch Disney movies (on my SmartTV – android OS) utilizing Plex. I use a service called PlayOn to record the movies that I store […]
