      5. Good news…I’d been wondering what I was going to do next time my NAS filled up and I needed to add a drive. I know I sure as heck wasn’t going to pay for a Synology HDD. So I’d have either had to clean up data or find a new solution. Thankfully I can just grow again now. Good move Synology, but I agree the brand damage was immense.

      6. Synology was already on the slide, tuenas, unraid, ugreen, unfi, etc are already better alternatives in many ways and feature hardware that’s superior. Sure it totally bombed their rep but there was little to shout about them in the first place. They had the lead and have thrown it away for pure greed and i for one will never trust a brand like them ever again.

      7. I have a very Synology heavy setup – a 211j, 214 play, 923+ nas as well as a synology router and 3 mesh APs. Whilst I don’t need another NAS any time soon, like you I am pleased that they reversed this decision. I won’t be reversing my decision to ditch their networking kit in favour of unifi in the new year though. I have lost too much trust in Synology’s consumer ecosystem over this (and also their networking kit hasn’t had much love in terms of SRM updates or new kit – still no WireGuard Support)

      8. You still need a Synology HDD on the new units just to turn them on and update the DSM. Check the press release, they haven’t rolled back the decision, they just postponed it for a bit. It effectively doesn’t do anything and Synology becomes even more toxic after this half-baked attempt to save whatever could be saved.

I went with a Synology 4 bay unit at the end of 2023 before this sillyness struck and my primary buying consideration was getting a model with ECC at a reasonable cost, which they offered and other options didn’t. If they had already locked down the drive compatibility to their own rebranded models I WOULD NOT have purchased it and all this change means for me is that I might consider them in the future again. With that said, their moves elsewhere about removing codecs for licensing reasons seem really silly as other nas models let you buy licenses fro proprietary file systems like XFAT but removing it from systems that HAD it is beyond the pale. If they keep up their antics on these other fronts I’ll have to treat them like WD after the SMR smuggling games of a coupel of years ago where I just assume they’re up to shady stuff until I can prove otherwise.

      11. Back in February, I replaced my outdated underpowered, under-spec plastic Synology DS 918+ and DS 418+ with two UGREEN DX 4800 Plus. I cancelled C2 cloud storage subscription. I also replaced my Synology RT6600AX with a Ubiquiti UDR7 UniFi Dream Router 7. Now I’m completely out of Synology’s ecosystem.

      16. Ruined brand, but if not for the ‘our brand…. firmware’-only policy it is the fact that other problems plaque Synology by their own doing.
        – sub par CPUs in basically every NAS
        – DS24xx series it allowed to have a volume of 100+TB “because the CPU doesn’t support”
        – Transcoding no longer ‘possible’ (=allowed) due to licensing issues?

        I have a DS2419 and DS3617 (only for the 10GBE actually), but this year I got a older Supermicro 847-12 (36 bays) which works a lot better.

      23. You are 100% right about the incentives they should have used to woo enterprise customers. Extended warranties and express replacements are things that enterprises are willing to pay for. They could have added remote support and monitoring too. These are all things that tier 1 storage vendors offer as standard.

      24. This should not be a surprise. A company tired something and changed their mind. We can speculate all day about reasons. Maybe they thought the manufacturers would jump on validation to get their drives on the list. Maybe this, maybe that. It doesn’t matter. I never ruled them out of my next purchase, and this decision hasn’t changed much for me. I’ll make that decision when I come to it. I have an 1821+. I want a second 8 bay to back it up to in a different location. Maybe that will be an 1825+, maybe it will be the new Ubiquiti 8 bay that was just announced, maybe something else. I still don’t know, and that decision is a next year decision anyway. I have reasons right now to go either way.

        For those saying it is too late, it isn’t. Companies have made much larger mistakes and survived. Companies have killed people and survived. Here’s the thing, if it really is too late, there is no need for them to change. They have lost the customers that are lost, and kept the ones they will keep. New customers will look at this past decision and buy or pass on the brand. No, it isn’t too late. Many new customers will buy now that would not have before. Others that decided not to will come back. Those who will never forgive or trust have exist, but just because some will never guy the brand again, it does not mean it was too late. Even some of those that say never again today, will say yes tomorrow.

        I’m not defending what they did. I didn’t like it. However, I attempt to be objective and less feeling about what I think about such things. When my feels get involved, I get super opinionated.

        The reactions at the time were warranted, and probably helped drive the ultimate decision to change, but now its over. We should all move on. Hate them and never support them again, or forgive them and consider the brand an option. Either way, let it go.

        I assume they still ship with v7.2 DSM atm presumably with the old drive restriction already in place, so is there a chicken or the egg problem here?

      33. It’s good news that Synology will ease-up on their stringent HDD & SSD restrictions. However, it’s not uncommon for a drive manufacturer to discontinue an HDD for a newer model after a few years. I’ve had lots of trouble finding any listed compatible disk drives that are still sold and on Synology’s compatibility list a few years after the list is released. Synology is not known for updating their compatibility lists and the HDD entries on their lists are extremely specific. What’s their commitment to maintaining and updating their compatibility lists with newer drives that are replacements for listed drives no longer on the market?

I stay hopeful that Unifi will find their stride in this segment and cause even more people to not only move NAS/Storage stuff but also their firewall/routers, access points and switches. I appreciate the effort Synology is making with the “decision reversal”, but them showing such disregard for consumers/prosumers (in so many ways!), they will never be my primary unit again, I don’t trust them. I have a DS923+, and will keep that for my access to DSM features and sunken cost of the upgrades, but given that it’s an AMD CPU and their very lackadaisical approach to bringing their hardware to a competitive level, companies like UGreen, Orico, etc. are getting a chance at my wallet and technology focus.

While Synology’s OS is more refined, UGreen is moving fast, focusing on getting the core system just right and not overextending themselves. I am very happy with my decision, and won’t be going back.

I considered going with Syno HDDs for a bit and just eating this but then did more research on alternatives and I actually now want something that isn’t so locked down both in hardware and software. My next NAS probably won’t be a Synology and I bet the competition will come up with some really compelling offerings in the next couple of years until I need to make a decision. Looking for a solid 4-5 bay purpose built machine that I can run something closer to “regular” Linux on. The Ugreen DX4800 Plus is already a contender for me.

For the moment they do what I need including Active Backup for Business. But with this policy change, I decided I won’t be going with Synology anymore and instead would get a Unifi NAS, since the rest of my network is already with Unifi. Mediocre product at a high price. They have had great software that has hand its hands tied behind its back with poor hardware selection. No real product development for years. When they brought out their own branded drives, I kinda liked the idea that they could update firmware on the fly, as opposed to my WD drives. I was considering this path as a nice option, but as soon as the made it mandatory, I nope’d out of that idea. It’s nice to see them back in the right direction, hope it lasts… I still haven’t decided my upgrade path yet, but I have so much more to consider now

        I can however accept if they do list drives proven to be unsuitable, but that’s a different question, and those drives are likely to be unsuitable for other NAS units as well.

        If you only have a list of accepted drives then you will discover customers complaining about that they can’t install drives they already have or that the offering of drives from the NAS supplier is lagging behind in capacity.

        I’m glad to see they’re putting the enforcement on the plus series in the bin, but any word on the RS series? Will we finally get out of the hell we’ve been dealing with for the last couple of years?

        At this point, I may continue my plan to add drives to the array, but when this chassis comes due for replacement (My DS1815+ lasted 8 years, so I’ll likely start looking in the next 2-3 years), I’ll likely look at 45 HomeLab or something similar, since it’s open architecture, unless Synology can prove different in the next few years.

What Synology have disregarded is that it’s not 2010 any more, and the use of linux is not limited to a handful of sorcerers living in their man caves. We have AI now, so the barrier of entry into a DYI or another linux based solution has never been lower. When an AI can write scripts or entire applications, Synology’s polished DSM suddendly doesn’t differ much from hypervisors or other NAS operating systems. I just hope the people will remember how Synology f.d them not once (with the HDDs) but twice (with the codec). When you have to go online and search for a workaround to use your device (which you had a PREMIUM for because of the software anyway), then there’s no point in sticking with a consumer-unfriendly company like Synology. The sooner Synology get to the FO part of the FAFO acronym, the better.

I am in the market for a larger NAS specifically like a 4 bay currently have a Synology 220J whilst this works fine / ok for what I use for as a server for my digitised music streamed to a player over my home network. I want to do the same for Movies so a 4 bay , originally looked at a newer Synology like the 423 / 923, but they have gone to be replaced by the 25 series. This U turn whilst appreciated I have been looking elsewhere. Not going to run plex, just using to store then send over my home network to a media player to handle upscale to 4K for those non 4k movies.

      242. One of the nice things about Synology is their Synology Hybrid Raid or SHR. It lets you add drives or replace drives to easily expand your storage space. You can also mix-n-match drives of different sizes. Does any other NAS manufacturer offer something similar? I started with two 8TB drives in my Synology 918+ 4-bay NAS. Then I added another 8TB… and then another. Then I started replacing those 8TB drives with 16TB drives. And it was easy. It’s the main reason I chose a Synology NAS instead of another traditional RAID system where you’re stuck with whatever drives you start with.

Saving $200 on drives by going third party isn’t worth much if I have to spend time and effort to address compatability/drive loss issues. I have other things I want to spend time on.

      250. I had no issue with them launching their own brand HDDs, but blocking other NAS specific drives (Red / purple ) series, etc was a d!ck move. They took the initiative of flagging incorrect drives used for a nas but implemented it the worst anti consumer possible by blocking.

        I’ve seen people using very low TBW ssds for high write applications or using performance drives on NAS just because… which would eventually lead to disasters anyway but that’s users’ own mistakes not on nas maker. They should have stopped at flagging and warning but not blocking.

        As for me, when it comes time to replace my older synology that’s still acting as the local backup box because of the wonderful software they have, this is also good news.

        That said…

        I recently purchased a ugreen. It’s now my primary server, and dollar for dollar, performance wise, never mind the attention to design details, it’s a very nice piece of kit. It’s been an outstanding home server, and has a nice media suite baked into it. The backups are not everything I want them to be, but hey, that’s why I’ve got the old synology.         In the past I used DIY solutions based on various linux flavours using samba and nfs. I went to Synology for ease of use. It has served me well.
        But I think I’m going back to DIY, but then with TrueNAS or Unraid to make it a bit easier. Even if Unraid or TrueNAS go in a wrong direction.. The hardware is still standard and the OS can be replaced.
        There are more and more nas style cases for minit-itx. So plan to go that route to replace my 9 year old synology.

So hardware wise I am inclined to plan my next NAS upgrade away from Synology; more so in light of the recent policy changes by Synology: hard drives compatibility, disabling harware transcoding, etc.

        Given that open source NAS software solutions are improving, I am looking forward to the moment when migrating from Synology to another platform will be a sensible decision because it will have become just as user friendly.

        So congratulations Synology. You had me. You could have got me all the way. Now that prospect is rather bleak.

      290. Never really cared about this at all. I have two 1823’s with only synology drives. There is no actual competition if you need the software… and small business enterprise focus. The only issue i have with synology is the hardware needs huge boost..they need to support AI and docker better, and keep the focus on security and software like mail plus.

Any vendor that demands you can only use their solution is an immediate no from me. I opted for QNAP and while it may not be as polished as Synology it has worked out just fine for my needs.

When all this started I debated going for a DS1821+ but because of these videos I knew that I could take my WD Red drives from my dead DS1817+ and they would work in the DS1825+ and I was starting to think about what I would do when my drives started to die?! Runs great. Also running an old Mellanox ConnectX-3 or – 4 network card with 40GbE – flawlessly. And I love the excellent (for my needs) and simple to use Synology backup software. I do understand that other vendors have better hardware but the Software (both DSM and Backup) WAS unique selling point in my case (I have 10+ years/3 systems experience with their products at home, and bought another RS2423+ at work) . I may add a Truenas homebuilt NAS for other reasons. Fortunately, there is no need currently to buy a commercial NAS for me – I STILL stick with Synology, but the tipping point has come near: Their HDD policy change came at the right moment: I had starte considering selling my RS2434+ and getting something else without strange company-imposed restrictions. Now, there is time before I need to buy another commercial NAS. I will strongly observe how Synology is moving forward.

I will run that until it dies and then something else might come along to serve my photo’s and video surveillance.         I’m also not pleased with DSM7 it really locks me out of a lot of configurations, hiding them in encrypted mystery database files rather than the traditional Linux config files, and a bunch of little irritating “Do it our way, you don’t really know what you want.” bits and bobs. I didn’t have these issues back on my DSM5 unit, but the hardware had become antiquated.

      400. Too late for me. Their hardware is still ancient and I just replaced 2 Synology NAS with a 6 bay ugreen running an i5. My DS423+ is now my backup (with exos drives). They lost a small customer, but they really had to expect that. Synology screwed themselves.

And their restrictions on hard drives, M.2 SSDs, and RAM are ridiculous. Do they not realize that hardware fails over time, and replacements are often the latest or oldest stock available? Yet if it’s not Synology-branded, it refuses to work.

        At least with UGREEN, you can use whatever compatible hardware you want — no corporate nonsense. If it fits and the BIOS supports it, it should just work.

        I’m done wasting money testing multiple parts just to find one the OS “approves,” while the BIOS says it’s fine. Enough is enough.

        Goodbye, Synology. Like so many others, you’ve lost a customer for life.

      424. While may other platforms have rolled out stuff where capabilities are improved with firmware and version updates, the history of Synology over the years has been quite the opposite. Over the years, I have recommended Synology to every client I had for a number of reasons. Given Synology’s removal of hardware transcoding from DSM as well as their still limited and dodgy docker support after all these years, there are almost no situations where they are still the dominant player, and this is by their own choices.

        The cost of their hard disk policy and other choices has been that, as an IT shop, our last few installations have been using TrueNAS on off the shelf hardware. Now that we have moved our support to this new platform, and have tooled up to support it, we have found that we can do what I need to for support, and my clients are doing more, faster, and with with less cost. The only downside is about twice as much preparation labor. Given that we make much more profit on labor as opposed to markup, it kept the customer cost of deployments about the same, while increasing my company’s profitability.

        Here is the real cost. We still have two older Synology NASes in my personal and work networks respectively and around 8 deployed in the field. These will be phased out over time as the hardware ages. Ours have already been functionally replaced with excellent results in both capacity and capability. Any new clients will not be getting a Synology NAS unless they specifically request one. I suspect other IT shops have made similar decisions for their own reasons, and these decisions by VARs and MSPs have a multiplicative effect on their client bases.

        While I can’t speak for other companies, the issue for us is trust; we can’t trust that Synology’s updates will not remove capabilities that we or our clients need as they have in the past, nor can we trust that the brand and products will improve over time. Synology will be able to win our business back, but it will be a long road. Every company has a rise and fall based upon their decisions and those of their competitors. Synology has declined, and they will need to work hard and make consistently good decisions to reverse this trend.

        I have gone and checked out on the going price for an equivalent Synology though (still got time to cancel). Nah. I know the software is the best. But it’s like when I went from Apple to Android. I’m just looking forward to having a system that I can tinker with without being handcuffed or punished. I’ve brought an NVME to use as a separate volume to run apps off. I’m contemplating several options of RAM (no Prime sales though, so no rush). It’s like upgrading a PC!!!!????

        It’s fun contemplating the possibilities and upgrades. With Synology, yeah it’s safe and familiar. But the ethernet speeds are tedious. the operating system slower (running off a HDD) and the NVMEs limited to catching at speeds from an already bygone era. I might even install TrueNAS. Maybe even go back and forth between them like an OS floating madman.

        I don’t care about the software limitations. I look forward to either solving or working around them. It’s nice just to be treated like a free adult instead of a locked in child with stabilisers and a speed limiter. Most of all I don’t trust Synology not to behave like a monopolising tyrant, selling me cheap old hardware at marked up prices like I have no other options.

        It’s not like their not still holding hardware transcoding back from us still.

As much as they are an known brand no serious corporate player who can afford their upper tier lineup will shell that much $ for extra rebranded HDDS. Synology is still a company who lives in the low, mid-upper tier of the SOHO portion of the market. The higher level is for serious clients who look at serious DataCenter level storage and wouldn’t even consider them. So all these shenanigans were just a moneygrab for … some months? If you strip the DSM out of a medium priced Synology box you are left with a pathetic hardware specced unit on which the new kids on the block Ugreen. Aostar and the rest will run circles around. Not even talking about the DIYers who were always LOLing at these specs.compared to the price All said and done if they pulled the rug once I am pretty sure they will try some other time and maybe in a different form. I do use my old Synology boxes but only for surveillance and backup, but I do think they are too late, on top of removing transcoding ability, on top of removing codecs from surveillance system, on top of removing SMART data from the GUI, removing 10gbe, etc etc, and finally reselling 5 to 6 year old hardware as new. They can’t be trusted to remove features from existing and future devices if they can save pennies in the future. I certainly suggest other NAS manufacturers first to friends instead of Synology now.

At my work where we have an older Synology we talked about replacing it and I made the point that now there is a vendor lock-in with the hard disks so we basically dismissed getting a new Synology. Even though it is super easy to manage due to the DSM software. Again this is going to be a timing issue because when will 7.3 come out? Having said that we would like to have another Synology but their reputation definitely is tarnished by all these shenanigans.

        I think Synology’s idea with the drive restrictions is so that they can better support problems since the drives run their own firmware and are supposedly better optimised to work with the enclosure/filesystem/SHR etc. Would be curious to know if that’s actually the case though. I did see someone on Reddit saying Synology drives throw fewer errors in their enterprise systems.

      486. My issue is their HAT5300 line is substantially more expensive the the equivalent Toshiba MG09 that it is rebranded from. Their HAT3310 are close enough to their original, but I won’t buy a Seagate ever again since they decided profit was more important than following US Sanctions, regardless of their excuse. I don’t care if you buy them, but lack of patriotism in a US company is something I can’t abide.

        Still watching what is going on. I won’t make a decision until it is time to buy that next NAS. You would think they would fast track the companies that make their rebranded drives, at least on their + series, which is more prosumer/small business than professional. People like Seagate or Toshiba are not going to be giving their drives away. As you say Rob, if the hardware is the same I cant really understand why Synology can’t verify them.       492. Having recently purchased a new DS423+ (not choosing to lock myself even more by opting for a DS425+) I decided to go for SSD read/write caching. I diligently checked the SSD compatibility list for the DS423+ (surprisingly extensive BTW) and found a match on Amazon (I think most of the supported/tested SSD’s in their list are quite old now, so harder to get).

        Waited two weeks to get hold of the pair of SSD’s I needed, only to find that I received that message during installation about them not being verified. Fortunately, I was able to continue past the warning. However, what’s going on? Why did I receive that warning for a hard to find SSD that was on the compatibility list?

        Are Synology slowly reducing their compatibility list on existing models?

        I am a IT professional. and my 1522+ is storing all my music and movies…. and is a backup location for my various home devices. But there is no way I paying 1 grand per 18TB drive.
        What synology SHOULD do… is for enterprise users with a SERVICE contract… they can require their drives all they want.
        But I am using UltraStore dives and they have never given me an issue and I should not be restricted… if a drive fails… that is why I have the synology… so I can swap it out.

      496. My RS2423+ was one of the enterprise class NAS’s that they did the vendor lock on. At the time I purchased it they didn’t even offer a drive the size I wanted, so I had to use a workaround to get the system from reporting “degraded” and not run the monthly scrubbing. I’m looking at adding more drives to that unit this year, and while they now have a 20TB SAS option, I can’t justify the 40% markup.

        For those of us with those vendor locked 2023 models, they still don’t support non-Synology drives, and I’m not holding my breath that the 2025 Plus series will get 3rd party support.       499. The situation with Synology drives has been sick from day one. A while back I was considering an upgrade to a xs+ unit but found that Synology had changed their tune and started forcing their authorized resellers to ONLY sell units with Synology drives pre-populated in the drive slots. And not just one or two either! They were forcing people to fill the unit instead. To make matters worse, their array of large size drives is sparse and seems purposely setup to force users to fill up NAS units more quickly and potentially push additional sales. I ended up purchasing a used xs+ unit where the seller couldn’t sell the original Synology drives due to security concerns.

      500. Well, Seagate drives had (according to Backblaze) far higher failure rate than WD drives, therefore I would go for them. But If I cannot use them in Synology I am thinking of replacing my old one with some other NAS brand… I would even pay for some extended support for other drives manufacturer (lets make it like some licence/upgrade like cameras…) eg. 10 dollars per drive or something like that… but I dont want to be limited to some specific drives….

      502. I spent the night trying to decide how best to increase my storage capacity on a DS1621+ that is already populated with 16TB drives. I couldn’t find a way to do it short of buying an 5 bay expansion unit which, by the way, cost as much as a 2nd 6 bay NAS. I’m looking at other brands now.

      503. I’ve gone to Ugreen Dxp4800plus. I used to have a DS220+ and was, am a novice with NAS abilities and use it just for Plex, photo storage etc. I’m very happy with moving and this was mainly because of the drive lock in fiasco.

        Prices can be even lower during sales such as Prime Day or Black Friday or even as prices fluctuate over time. Also even the 26TB WD Red Pro ($789.99) is cheaper than the Synology 20TB.

      506. Let’s give Synology the benefit of the doubt and say they are moving in this direction (of drive lock-in) to reduce the variability in devices so they can better support end-users. If that was one of their goals (instead of a blatant cash-grab), then why oh why did they make it mandatory? Why take away something from loyal customers that has been present since the founding of your company? DSM is nice but is it worth hundreds or thousands in up-charges for re-labeled drives?

        Roll out classes of devices: Beginner/entry-level=NAS with Synology-branded drives plus free tech support, mid-level/pro-sumer=NAS with optional branded drives and charged support, IT pro/tech geek=Synology enclosure + bring your own drives, you’re on your own. Or, screw over your existing base while confusing potential new customers.

      507. Thanks for the honest review. I would not mind paying a little more for a Synology branded hard drive or SSD for business purposes if that improves the support process, but these price differences are huge and for my friends, family and my own personal storage, freedom to use any brand of drive is simply a must-have.
        So Synology should stop thinking they are EMC or NetApp and reverse this self-destructive choice with a firmware update and a public apology. Only then will I ever buy or recommend a Synology system again. I have used Synology for decades and I was really looking forward to upgrading this year, but now I look at other brands.

      511. Buying synology drives will never be the best value because they are too low volume, both in manufacturing and shipping. Most home and prosumer users are keeping an eye on sites like ServerPartDeals for floods of things like 18tb brand new enterprise drives for sale for crazy low prices like $189 because some shipment got refused by a datacenter somewhere. These are not common prices, but it happens commonly enough that it’s a nobrainer to wait for them. Synology can’t have sales like this, because they don’t make or ship enough drives. They’ll never be able to sell them to us basically, so they have to force it.

      515. Having to acquire a rare special type of hard disk has caused major problems for enterprise customers using Synology products. Even if you put price aside – Our problem in Australia is the geographic “tyranny of distance” with Synology having zero service centres covering regional areas, and neither of the (two) distributors carrying stock of Synology drives in capital cities. When a drive fails we have to wait for replacements to be shipped to Australia and they don’t even offer advance replacement service.

        The company I work for still have over 56 x Synology 12-Bay NAS in our business we need to replace in the second half of 2025 and at the moment we are handling drive failures by holding our own stock in Sydney & Melbourne and having to ship them overnight to our branch sites. WE DO NOT WANT TO BE A SYNOLOGY SERVICE CENTRE!!!! They should have got their act together and organised a maintenance provider such as Interactive maintenance solutions before embarking on this lunacy. It does not matter if they change policy now, the management here are so sick of the hassles and will never buy that brand again.

Maybe something has changed, as it has been a long time since I’ve been in enterprise storage, but the markup was usually justified by a guaranteed availability of certified drives over a longer period of time than manufacturers and retailers provide to the general public. Mixing different drives isn’t as bad as it once was but it can still be a gamble.

      519. Robbie if someone is buying larger hard drives – the NAS box is wrapper around the hard drives.
        Hard drives are much more expensive than the the NAS unit.
        Synology NAS DS923 – cost approx £137 / drive bay vs Seagate Ironwolf Pro 18 TB is £380
        Synology drive bay cost 26% (the wrapper) . . . Seagate 18 TB hard drive 74% ( storage media) . . . . price per drive bay

      520. I’m still seeing a couple of ideas behind their plan…
        1) As with Broadcom/VMware – chase enterprise, after volume discounts buyer won’t care.
        2) as with (1) less customers but far higher profit margins, and it’s the small aka “expensive to support” customers that you shed or overcharge.
        3) They have a hope to charge WD/Seagate etc to validate their drive models, perhaps including a charge per drive. Though with the big margin on their own brand drives this seems less likely for now.

Ditched Synology earlyer this year after +10 years and multiple generations of Synology NAS-ses because of (1) the increasing vendor lockin policy by Synology and (2) the lack of flexibility with regards to M.2 storage. Moved to Asustor and am quite happy with the platform, software, community support and flexibility overall.

      529. This video pushes me even further from Synology. Either they have a completely out of touch marketing dept. or Synology really wants to ease out of consumer class NAS systems. I think Synology will see that consumers no longer want their NAS models soon due to the lack of iGPUs for transcoding Plex, the outdated CPUs they use, and/or because of the Synology only HDD/SSD requirements. They would be best served, profitability wise, to license their OS to others down the road.

        As I said in the previous NASCompares video, I’ll keep my DS920+ until it dies and recently have added a NUC as my Plex server that transcodes my 4k library from my DS920+ storage easily and only use my DS920+ for storage and surveillance. I will be buying something other than Synology to eventually replace my DS920+.

        Maybe I’ll just use my Asus NUC 15 Pro+ with external storage via Thunderbolt. Like this: Acasis 40Gbps M.2 NVMe 4 Bay RAID SSD Enclosure. The Ultra 2XXH CPUs are light years more capable that the J4125 CPU in my DS920+.

        The NUC market is exploding now and it will be exciting to see where this goes. The NUC market in 2025 is $2.5B and is expected to grow by 15% each year through 2033. This might be understated since NUCs now can replace desktops and an external GPU can be added via a docking station.

I’m gonna be honest, I own a DS1522+ Synology and it’s populated with 12 TB hard drives from Synology for a few years now, and not once have I seen or received a firmware update that is needed for their hard drives. It may happen more in data centers by certain applications that the company needs to be running in, but for home use, I feel it’s a terrible excuse to keep forcing people to buy their drives. If it offers no other benefits, then a normal Seagate or Western Digital drive, granted those drives will come with five-year warranties compared to the three you get, and the possible chance of getting a firmware update, and you don’t have to pull the drives out and update them. I haven’t had an update on a hard drive since 1999, a Maxtor 20 gig hard drive back in the day.

      537. I still maintain that Synology are watching and waiting to see how user feedback and the PR fall out of this drive lock-in policy plays out. If I were in their marketing team right now, I’d be very worried about how the near-universal negative press they’re receiving will impact sales.

        Sinology won’t tell us what the verification requirements are. That tells me there is nothing special here, other than corporate BS. If third-party drives, the ones that have always been verified, do become usable, it will prove there was nothing wrong with them to begin with.

        What will be more interesting is to see how Synology walk this decision back if they get smart and choose to.

      538. Bottom line here, it’s pure profit driving Sinology’s decision to lock users into their own rebranded drives. No matter what corporate-speak excuse they offer, it cannot be denied. Had Synology done the R & D, spent millions building their own drives, there might have been some justification. Instead, they’re basically slapping their own label onto Seagate and Toshiba drives and replacing the OEM firmware with their own. That firmware, based on performance stats, hasn’t been touched at all. The reason for the firmware, is to control the situation. Synology say you can update the firmware on their drives without a shutdown. Sure, you could do this on other drives, too. Synology simply don’t offer that facility. There’s nothing about their firmware that allows live updates, other than them making a determination to do it or not.

        At the prices for a 16Tb HDD from Synology as opposed to an Ironwolf, you could spend over £1,200 more by populating a 4 bay with their drives.

        That’s an awful lot more money for what amounts to nothing in terms of difference between thir drives and the OEM versions they’re based on.

      541. You know, the price difference between the drives would actually pay for a NAS. I recently purchased a new DS423+ for my backups. It cost me less than the price difference between a 20Tb Seagate Exos and the Synology equivalent HDD.

        Even at lower capacity points,, multiple Synology HDD’s will add the cost of another NAS to the total cost.
